John
Popkin was a shepherd until his tenth birthday. Later, he studied
physics, philosophy and biology at the University of Waterloo.
Since then, John has worked as a sleep lab technician, a genetics
lab technician, a quality control manager at a large bread factory,
a bartender, a pastry cook, and as a plastics mould maker. Six
years ago he drifted into theatre where he seems to have found
a home. Starting initially as a technician for corporate events,
John drifted more and more to theatre, and has since became very
passionate about lighting and set design. He spends his spare
time climbing and carving rock. Some recent design credits include
set and lights for Sex Machine, lighting for Press Play 4 [with
Itai Erdal], lighting for Liminal, set for The Secret Project,
lighting for The Fever, and lighting for The Bond. Upcoming projects
include My Father's House (Jane Productions), and Press Play V
(Science Friction) at VCEC in June.
