June 21, 2006 update:

The 2005 production of How I Learned to Drive, for which this web site was created, won 2 Jesse Richardson Theatre Awards for 2006.

Eileen Barrett won for outstanding performance by an actress in a lead role, and Allan Morgan won for outstanding performance by an actor in a lead role.

In all, the production received 5 nominations at the Jessie Awards.

How I Learned to Drive is a funny, surprising and devastating story of survival as seen through the lens of a troubling relationship between a young girl, Li'l Bit, and an older man, her uncle Peck. How I Learned to Drive is the story of a woman who learns the rules of the road and life from behind the wheel. Of the play, the New York Times says “Ms. Vogel has written a lovely, harrowing guide to the crippling persistence of one woman’s memories.”

How I Learned to Drive is noteworthy for the many awards that it won, including the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for drama. Its initial off-Broadway run lasted for fourteen months. In addition to the Pulitzer, the play also was awarded an Obie, a Drama Desk Award, a New York Drama Critics’ Award, an Outer Circle Critics Award, and the Lucille Lortel Award.

This production of How I Learned to Drive features a stellar ensemble cast including: Eileen Barrett as L’il Bit, Allan Morgan as Uncle Peck, Tammy Bentz as the Female Greek Chorus, Jacques Lalonde as the Male Greek Chorus, and Kelly Metzger as the Teenage Greek Chorus.

How I Learned to Drive is directed by James Fagan Tait.
Stage manager is Gail Folka. Lighting design by John Popkin.

This production was the #1 pick by the North Shore News at the 2004 Vancouver Fringe Festival and a top 3 pick by the Georgia Straight. It was also the Vancouver premier of the play.
